Across all platforms, my favorite tower defense of all time is called Defense Grid, premium TD for the PC/360/et al. This game reminds me a lot of defense grid, much as its predecessor, Tower Raiders 1, did. The difference is in the many bells and whistles Tower Raiders 2 (TR2) has over TR1 and even makes me wish the makers of Defense Grid would take a few cues from Gianormous for their sequel. This game has thousands of reviews averaging 4.5/5 stars on the other market -- please don't one star it for stupid reasons here. I want the Amazon app store to get better selection, and illiterate reviews don't help.

TR2 still has a nice blend of fixed path, maze-able and mixed maps that are incredibly well designed and very fun to create different solutions for. One trap some other tower defense games fall into is just letting you slap towers alongside a path, they forget to create real challenges and they don't actually create real puzzles. TR2 brings lots of challenge and lets you figure out your own varied solutions. You still have the original 3 levels of tower upgrades, but there's also a new 4th level of upgrades that has to be purchased as you gain experience, along with general tower damage boosts. There are still 4 difficulty settings for each of 24 levels (7 of which are available in this demo version) providing an insane amount of bang for the buck. Don't compare the Gold version of this game to ninety-nine cent games -- it's far more on par with and often superior to the number of hours you get from a $30-60 console/PC game.

One big addition is the hero tower. These range from bonus resource generation to weapons to defenses, but each use resets the clock and you have to wait a while to use it again. You start with a couple of towers to choose from free, and can buy additional hero towers as you gain experience. Another addition that adds to the fun are a nice variety of achievements, or challenges for you to complete. Some are pretty standard -- one is for completing the game for example. Some are more fun, asking you to win only using one type of tower. Achievements aren't always fun, but when they're well-crafted as they are here, they add a lot to the game and get you to play in different ways.

TR2 isn't the flashiest tower defense on Android, but it is far and away the most fun to play for the strategically inclined gamer. TD may be a popular genre, but it isn't easy to do well. TR2 nails it.
