I'm a mom blogger over at GreenOrganicMama.com and TechnoMommy.com, and an avid user of apps for iPhone/iPod Touch and my Samsung Vibrant Android phone. I've been hounding the people over at Winkpass to create an Android version of their awesome iPeriod app for ages. The last answer I got from them was pretty wishy-washy, so I finally gave up and conceded defeat: I'd have to find something I could run on my Android phone.

It's tough finding software for women, as the fact of the matter is that most developers out there are of the male persuasion. After a few hiccups, I decided to give Pink Pad Free a try. Mind you, I first downloaded that off the Android Market. I then chose the upgrade, Pink Pad Pro, here on the newly-debuted Amazon Appstore. Everything was looking like it was downloading fine, and trying to install. However, here's the catch: it appears that if you have a free app that you downloaded from the Android Market, you'll have to upgrade to the full version via the Market as well, or uninstall the free version first, and then buy the full from the Amazon Appstore. There must be some compatibility issues from the way Amazon screens apps before they release them here in their Appstore. If you're like me, and you have years of data saved in a period tracker, buyer beware: You don't want to lose your data, just because you bought a free version somewhere else first.

Pink Pad Pro is pretty useful, with a clean interface, and I think it will be a suitable substitute for iPeriod, which I just can't seem to get for Android. Aside from the Market/Appstore upgrade issue, there are only a couple other niggly things:

1) The back button - I HATE that pressing the back button in the app takes out entirely out of the program, instead of back to the main screen of Pink Pad Pro. Makes me BONKERS. But this should be an easy fix for the developers.

2) iPeriod has easy, at-a-glance summaries of your most recent cycles, and the "Next 12". I wish the "List" view in Pink Pad Pro offered these details, instead of the messy summary of the past month that it shows now. I don't find the current "List" useful at all. A list of recent cycles is especially helpful when I'm at the doctor's office. Please integrate this option.

3) The default period length - Pink Pad lets you enter an average length of your periods, so that when you enter a new one, it will automatically mark the calendar for that average number of days of your cycle. Well, I think there's a programming calculation error here: When I try to use this feature when inputting my new cycle, it ADDS this number to the current starting day. So, instead of my desired five days, the calendar adds five plus today = six. I then had to go into the settings and change my default period length to four, which my body can tell you for the past 22 years should read FIVE. Again, another bug that should be easily remedied.

4) Data backup - I'm not seeing any way to back up my data in this app to the cloud, which is a feature found in iPeriod, and a few other Android apps of this nature. One even backs up to Google Calendar, which I thought was amazing (if only that particular app was that amazing, too). Until this is remedied, I think I will have to continue entering data in both iPeriod and Pink Pad Pro.

5) The included help file is for another program, BabyBump. Please fix this.

All in all, this app serves its purpose, and whatever niggly little problems it has should be easy enough for the developers to address.
